About Us
Afori is changing how work gets done in one of the world's biggest industries: insurance.
We build AI for insurance brokers. Brokers spend most of their day on back-office work that starts in their inbox, turning messy emails and messages into things that actually need doing. Afori does that work for them. It lives where brokers already are, inside Outlook and WhatsApp, and in our own web app.
The product is live and in production with real brokers today. We raised a €4m seed round that was 12x oversubscribed, led by General Catalyst, the early investors in Airbnb, Stripe, and Mistral, with a group of well-known angels alongside them. The founding team built wefox before this, an insurtech that reached a €4.5bn valuation, so we know the industry and we know how to scale. You'd join as one of the first engineers, early enough to shape both the company and the product.
Who this role is for
We want someone who has already built a product from nothing and stayed to run it in production. An ex-founder, a former CTO, or a lead engineer. You've made the important calls with no one above you to catch your mistakes.
Now you want to build again. Not run a company, not manage a team, just point everything you've learned at a hard problem. Ours is the AI agents at the core of the product. It's the hardest problem we have, and we want you to own it.
You'd work next to the founders, with the freedom to decide how things get built. This is a hands-on job on purpose. The most useful thing you can do here is write code.
Your Impact
You'll build AI agents that feed our context layer. At Afori, we want to deeply understand our customers and the risks they're exposed to by extracting and synthesizing structured and unstructured data points from multiple channels. You'll design new methodologies for data extraction and context engineering so our agents can advise and serve our customers in the best possible way.
Key Responsibilities
- System Architecture: Design, build, and maintain scalable backend systems for AI agent orchestration and real-time data processing.
- Build AI agents: Take full ownership in building new AI agents that take over backoffice work on behalf of the broker
- AI/ML Collaboration: Partner with AI/ML teams to deploy models into production (e.g., customer insights, task automation).
- Performance Optimization: Optimize APIs and microservices for speed, security, and simplicity.
- Problem-Solving: Tackle complex challenges in data integration, workflow automation, and system reliability.
- Collaboration: Being honest in code reviews and design talks, and keeping the bar high.
- Customer focus: Working with the business side so what you build actually solves what brokers struggle with.
What We’re Looking For
Technical Skills
- 5+ years building backend systems in NodeJS & Typescript.
- Expertise in cloud-native architectures (AWS/Azure) & Docker.
- Strong experience with RAG creation & management, context engineering and agentic memory creation
- Strong RESTful API design experience.
- Proficiency with relational (PostgreSQL) and distributed systems.
- Experience in Kubernetes & Infrastructure and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform) is a plus.
- Experience with AI/ML pipelines (model deployment, MLOps) is a strong plus.
- Familiarity building with LLMs / agentic workflows would be a plus.
