The Engineering Manager shall lead the development and growth of Wabtec s Brake Electronics capability in India for Transit applications. This role is responsible for building a strong, self sufficient engineering team, reducing dependence on the European Centers of Competence (CoC), and enabling high quality, customer focused execution across the full brake electronics lifecycle. The role combines deep technical leadership, people management, and strategic capability development. The successful candidate will lead a team of approximately 10 Electronics Engineers, while working closely with global stakeholders, including the European CoC, systems engineering, software, validation, manufacturing, and customer project teams. Key Responsibilities Technical Leadership & Ownership Provide technical leadership for brake electronics systems used in transit applications, including: ECU / electronic control units Power electronics and I/O modules Sensors, actuators, and communication interfaces Safety critical electronics for braking systems Act as the India engineering point of contact for brake electronics architecture, design decisions, and technical reviews. Ensure designs meet Wabtec standards, applicable railway norms (e.g., EN, IEC), and safety requirements for brake systems. Support system level trade off decisions in collaboration with brake systems, software, and validation teams. Capability Building & Localization Strategy Drive the strategic development of brake electronics capability in India, with a clear roadmap to: Increase end to end design ownership within the India team Systematically reduce reliance on European Centers of Competence (CoC) Improve speed, cost efficiency, and customer responsiveness Lead and execute Transfer of Technology (ToT) initiatives from European CoC to India, including: Structured knowledge transfer plans covering architecture, design rationale, lessons learned, and legacy platforms Progressive transfer of responsibility from support roles to full ownership Ensuring long term capability retention beyond individual projects or people Establish and institutionalize best practices, design guidelines, templates, and technical review processes for brake electronics engineering in India. Work closely with supplier engineering teams to strengthen local capability by: Engaging key electronic component and system suppliers early in the design phase Supporting supplier technical reviews, design validations, and problem resolution Enabling alignment between Wabtec engineering requirements and supplier capabilities Collaborate with sourcing, quality, and manufacturing teams to support supplier localization strategies where appropriate, without compromising safety, quality, or compliance. Continually assess skill gaps and capability maturity in the India team and define targeted training, mentoring, and exposure plans to close them. Act as a bridge between global and regional stakeholders to ensure consistent application of global standards while enabling local execution autonomy. Team Leadership & People Development Lead, mentor, and manage a team of ~10 Electronics Engineers. Develop technical depth, system thinking, and domain expertise within the team. Perform regular performance reviews, coaching, and career development planning. Foster a culture of engineering excellence, accountability, and collaboration. Support hiring plans as required to meet capability and project demands. Project Execution & Delivery Ensure on time, high quality delivery of brake electronics deliverables for transit customer projects. Work closely with program management to support cost, quality, and schedule objectives. Proactively manage risks, technical issues, and resource constraints. Provide transparent status reporting to engineering leadership and stakeholders. Global & Cross Functional Collaboration Work effectively with: European and global brake electronics CoC Systems engineering, software, RAMS, validation, manufacturing, and sourcing Represent the India team in global technical reviews and governance forums. Support customer discussions and technical clarifications when required. Required Qualifications Education Bachelor s or Master s degree in Electronics / Electrical Engineering or a related field. Experience 12 16 years of experience in electronics engineering, ideally within: Rail / transit systems Automotive braking, safety critical, or embedded electronics domains Minimum 5+ years of experience leading engineering teams. Proven track record in developing electronics products from concept to industrialization. Prior experience working with global or matrix organizations. Technical Skills Strong understanding of: Analog and digital electronics design Power electronics basics Microcontroller based systems Communication protocols (CAN, Ethernet, etc.) Experience with safety critical electronic systems. Familiarity with railway or functional safety standards is highly desirable. Ability to engage in architecture level discussions, not just component design. Leadership & Behavioural Skills Strong ownership mindset with the ability to build and scale new capabilities. Excellent communication skills, capable of influencing across geographies. Structured problem solving and decision making ability. Comfortable operating in an environment undergoing capability transition and change. Desirable / Nice to Have Prior experience with brake systems or rail safety electronics. Exposure to EN / IEC railway standards. Experience supporting customer audits or safety assessments. Hands on experience setting up new engineering teams or domains. What Success Looks Like A technically strong, confident brake electronics team in India.
