About the role
You will be joining the Ubuntu Foundations Engineering team as an experienced software engineer, focusing on maintaining and enhancing the Ubuntu bootloader stack to ensure fast, reliable, and secure Ubuntu systems across all devices and in the cloud. The boot process is crucial for system stability, reliability, and security, contributing significantly to Ubuntu's success. Your role will involve working with lower-level technologies from hardware to firmware and Linux itself, particularly in the operating system startup phase. You should be comfortable with technologies like Secure Boot, Measured Boot, and Full Disk Encryption. Key Responsibilities: - Collaborate with a distributed team to define and shape Ubuntu's boot architecture - Work with teams specializing in Ubuntu for server, desktop, IoT, and clouds - Write high-quality code for new features and upstream contributions - Contribute to feature and bug fixes in projects including Grub, shim, u-boot, and associated tools - Debug issues and provide high-quality fixes - Review code from other engineers - Engage in discussions and collaborate on finding optimal solutions - Mentor less senior engineers and participate in design reviews Qualifications Required: - Development experience with early boot software like TF-A, OP-TEE, U-Boot, shim, GRUB, or the Linux kernel - Experience on non-x86 platforms such as ARM, RISC-V - Passion for technology and working with talented individuals - Motivated, curious, flexible, articulate, and accountable - Proficient Linux user with a broad interest in the future of Linux - Experience or interest in learning how to package software for Debian and Ubuntu - Bachelor's or equivalent degree in Computer Science, STEM, or related field - Enterprising, thoughtful, and self-motivated In this role, you will be a crucial part of the Ubuntu Foundations Team, focusing on the core of the Ubuntu system and ensuring the delivery of the latest and best free software components in a user-friendly and highly reliable form. You will collaborate with the upstream community on projects like Grub, shim, and u-boot, while also working with other teams to enhance the performance and experience of Ubuntu.
