Manager, Machine Learning & Data Science

Role Overview: As the Manager, Machine Learning & Data Science at Cohere Health, you will be instrumental in developing and expanding the company's AI capabilities in India. Leading a team of machine learning engineers and data scientists, your focus will be on creating and implementing models to automate and enhance intricate clinical and administrative processes. Your responsibilities will encompass the entire applied machine learning and data science lifecycle, from problem framing and experimentation to deploying production models and continuous optimization. Working with healthcare data, both structured and unstructured, you will be tasked with extracting insights and developing intelligent systems to improve prior authorization and overall clinical decision-making. Key Responsibilities: - Lead, mentor, and nurture a team of machine learning engineers and data scientists to foster a collaborative and high-performance environment. - Engage in hands-on contributions throughout the machine learning/data science lifecycle, including data exploration, feature engineering, model development, evaluation, and deployment. - Design, build, and deploy machine learning models for a variety of use cases involving structured and unstructured data. - Translate complex business and clinical challenges into scalable machine learning and data science solutions. - Establish and enforce best practices for experimentation, model validation, performance tracking, and reproducibility. - Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Engineering, Clinical, and Analytics teams to align solutions with business objectives. - Guide the development of scalable data science and machine learning systems, including data preprocessing pipelines and production workflows. - Monitor model performance, identify enhancement opportunities, and drive continuous iteration and optimization. - Communicate technical concepts, methodologies, and insights effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. - Contribute to the hiring and scaling of the team in India through activities such as recruiting, onboarding, and coaching team members. Qualifications Required: Must-haves: - Minimum 8+ years of experience in machine learning, data science, or applied AI roles, with at least 2+ years in leading technical teams. - Hands-on experience in building, evaluating, and deploying machine learning models in production. - Strong foundation in statistical methods, experimental design, and model evaluation. - Proficiency in Python and familiarity with ML frameworks like PyTorch and scikit-learn. - Experience working with large, complex datasets, both structured and unstructured. - Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to convert business challenges into analytical solutions. - Excellent communication skills to articulate complex concepts clearly to diverse stakeholders. - Experience thriving in fast-paced, evolving environments. Nice-to-haves: - Prior experience in healthcare, especially with payer, provider, or clinical data. - Knowledge of NLP, deep learning (e.g., transformers), or generative AI (e.g., RAG). - Familiarity with MLOps practices and production ML systems. - Experience with Spark or large-scale data processing frameworks. - Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS and SageMaker. - Familiarity with working in a global or distributed team setting. - Previous experience in a GCC or in building teams in India.
