About the role
As a highly experienced Principal Backend Engineer at Cornerstone OnDemand, you will play a crucial role in designing, building, and scaling enterprise-grade talent management platforms. Your main responsibilities will include: - Designing, developing, and optimizing high-performance backend services using Java and Python - Leading the design and implementation of microservices-based architectures - Building and maintaining RESTful APIs, data pipelines, and event-driven systems - Ensuring system scalability, reliability, security, and performance - Collaborating with product, frontend, data, and platform teams to translate business needs into technical solutions - Driving backend best practices around code quality, testing, observability, and security - Mentoring and reviewing code for senior and mid-level engineers - Supporting production systems through monitoring, troubleshooting, and performance tuning Qualifications required for this role include proficiency in the following tech stacks: Python Stack: - Python 3.11+ - async/await, type hints, dataclasses - FastAPI & Pydantic - API development, request/response validation, OpenAPI specifications - Async Programming - asyncio, async DB access, non-blocking I/O - Testing - pytest, async testing patterns, mocks, fixtures Java Stack: - Java 17 / 21 - modern Java features, records, pattern matching, virtual threads - Spring Boot 3.x - REST APIs, validation, Actuator, configuration management - Spring Data JPA - repositories, custom queries, entity relationships - Spring Security - JWT, OAuth2, authentication and authorization - Testing - JUnit 5, Mockito, integration testing, Testcontainers In addition, you should have experience with: - Data Pipelines & Events - asynchronous processing, messaging patterns - Database Design - relational databases, schema design, performance tuning - DevOps & Cloud: Docker, Maven, Pants/pip/poetry, AWS, Cloud-Native Patterns - CI/CD, Monitoring & Collaboration: GitHub Actions, monitoring & observability, collaboration in cross-functional agile teams Furthermore, any experience with event-driven systems, building SaaS platforms with multi-tenant architectures, or familiarity with AI/ML data pipelines would be advantageous for this role.
