About the role
Job / Role: The Area Manager Hydrogen Generation Unit (HGU) is responsible for leading and managing all construction activities associated with the Hydrogen Generation Unit of a refinery or petrochemical project. The role ensures safe, timely, and quality execution of civil, structural, mechanical, piping, electrical, instrumentation, refractory, insulation, and pre-commissioning works while coordinating multidisciplinary teams and contractors to achieve project objectives. Key Responsibilities: Lead and manage all construction activities related to the Hydrogen Generation Unit from mobilization through mechanical completion and handover. Plan and supervise multidisciplinary construction activities including civil, structural steel, equipment erection, piping, electrical, instrumentation, refractory, insulation, painting, and associated utility systems. Ensure construction activities comply with approved IFC drawings, engineering specifications, project procedures, and international standards. Coordinate installation of major HGU equipment including steam methane reformers (SMR), reformer furnaces, waste heat boilers, shift converters, pressure swing adsorption (PSA) units, reactors, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, stacks, chimneys, compressors, pumps, storage vessels, and associated piping systems. Supervise erection of furnace modules, reformer coils, convection sections, burners, ducting, flue gas systems, and high-temperature process equipment. Manage fabrication and erection of process piping, high-pressure hydrogen piping, steam systems, fuel gas systems, utility piping, pipe racks, and structural steel. Coordinate heavy lifting operations and critical equipment installation in accordance with approved lifting studies and safety procedures. Monitor construction progress against project schedules and implement recovery plans to mitigate delays. Ensure timely availability of construction resources, materials, equipment, tools, and subcontractors. Coordinate closely with Engineering, Procurement, QA/QC, HSE, Planning, and Commissioning teams to resolve technical and interface issues. Review construction work packs, method statements, lifting plans, Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), and risk assessments prior to execution. Ensure compliance with ASME, API, ASTM, NFPA, IEC, and client specifications applicable to hydrogen generation facilities. Monitor construction quality, conduct inspections, and ensure prompt closure of NCRs, punch lists, and quality observations. Enforce strict adherence to HSE standards, including Permit-to-Work (PTW), confined space entry, hot work, work at height, lifting operations, and fire safety requirements. Coordinate hydrotesting, pneumatic testing, flushing, drying, reinstatement, mechanical completion, and system turnover activities. Support pre-commissioning and commissioning activities by ensuring construction readiness and timely handover of completed systems. Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly construction progress reports, productivity analyses, manpower forecasts, and resource plans. Lead, mentor, and develop construction supervisors, field engineers, foremen, and contractor personnel to ensure efficient project execution. Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent engineering discipline. Professional certification in Construction Management or Project Management is desirable. Experience : 15–20 years of experience in refinery, petrochemical, gas processing, hydrogen generation, or hydrocarbon process plant construction.Proven experience in large-scale EPC refinery and petrochemical construction projects.Hands-on experience in construction, mechanical completion, pre-commissioning, and commissioning support of hydrogen generation facilities.
