Engineering Manager, Search Platforms

As a Software Engineering Manager at Google, your role goes beyond just Search. You not only have the technical expertise to take on and provide technical leadership to major projects, but also manage a team of Engineers. Your responsibilities include optimizing your own code and ensuring that Engineers are able to optimize theirs. You will manage your project goals, contribute to product strategy, and help develop your team. Teams work in various areas such as information retrieval, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking, security, data compression, and user interface design. Responsibilities: - Set and communicate team priorities that support the organization's goals. Define and evolve the team's charter with a balanced portfolio of foundational investments and exploratory bets. - Set expectations with people based on their level and role, aligned with the organization's goals. Regularly meet with individuals to discuss performance and development, provide feedback, and coaching. - Develop the technical goal and roadmap, evolving it to meet anticipated future requirements and infrastructure needs. Advocate for Artificial Intelligence (AI) adoption within the team. - Design, guide, and vet system designs within the scope of the area. Write product or system development code to solve problems. - Review code developed by other engineers, providing feedback to ensure best practices such as style guidelines, code accuracy, testability, and efficiency. Qualifications: - Bachelors degree, or equivalent practical experience. - 8 years of experience in software development. - 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role. - 2 years of experience in a people management or team leadership role. Preferred qualifications: - Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or a related technical field. - 3 years of experience working in a matrixed organization. - Experience with Platform, Infrastructure, or Server Side.
