Software Engineer (Java/Spring, AWS) – Financial Services Location: Riverwoods, IL (Onsite Preferred / Hybrid for Exceptional Candidates) Job Type: Contract
About the Role

As a Software Engineer, you’ll architect, develop, and optimize backend microservices and distributed data pipelines using the latest Java technologies and AWS cloud services. Responsibilities

Design, build, and maintain robust backend services using Java 21, Spring Boot, and microservice patterns

Develop and optimize large-scale data processing pipelines with AWS EMR, Apache Spark, and cloud-native tools

Implement comprehensive automated testing with TDD, BDD, JUnit, and Cucumber

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver secure, compliant, enterprise-grade solutions
-
Enhance system observability with metrics, logging, and performance tuning for reliability

Lead or participate in code reviews, architectural discussions, and process improvements
-
Ensure strict adherence to financial industry standards for security, auditability, and operational excellence

Required Skills and Experience

5–7 years as a Software Engineer or Backend Engineer with a focus on Java
-
Expert-level proficiency in Java 21, Spring Boot, RESTful APIs, and microservices
-
Hands-on experience with AWS (EMR, S3, Lambda, CloudWatch highly valued)

Solid background in distributed systems, data structures, algorithms, and data pipeline design

Demonstrated practice of TDD, BDD, Cucumber, and automated testing frameworks
-
Experience with CI/CD, Git, Jenkins, or GitLab
-
Experience in regulated, enterprise, or financial environments

Willingness to work onsite in Riverwoods, IL (hybrid considered for exceptional candidates)

Preferred Skills

Experience with AWS EMR, Apache Spark, and large-scale data processing

Familiarity with Kafka, Kinesis, or streaming data technologies

Exposure to DevOps, infrastructure-as-code, Docker, or Kubernetes
