Job Summary: IT - ADMIN - Software Architect - Consultant - Artificial Intelligence Location: Remote (Occasional onsite in Columbia, SC) | Contract: 12 months, possible extension | $125/hr max | Nationwide applicants (Eastern Time Zone hours required)
About the Role
Join the State of South Carolina’s Office of Technology and Information Services (OTIS) as a Software Architect - Consultant (Artificial Intelligence). As a vital member of the AI Center of Excellence, you will leverage your AI expertise to shape, evaluate, and guide the responsible implementation of AI solutions transforming public sector services. This is a newly created position with high visibility and impact, offering the chance to influence statewide technology strategies.
Responsibilities

Serve as the AI subject-matter expert, advising OTIS and stakeholders on best practices for scalable, secure, and responsible AI adoption

Analyze and evaluate potential AI solutions for technical feasibility, security, and compliance with state and federal guidelines

Architect, design, and review AI frameworks and infrastructure supporting statewide digital transformation initiatives

Lead technical workshops, documentation, and knowledge-sharing sessions to elevate AI literacy within state agencies

Provide technical oversight during the implementation and integration of AI technologies, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify opportunities and create roadmaps for AI-driven enhancements

Required Skills and Experience
-
Expertise in AI/ML solution architecture, including large language models, neural networks, and data engineering

Proven experience designing and implementing enterprise-scale AI initiatives

Strong background in cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and containerization tools
-
Deep understanding of data security, privacy, and compliance in AI environments
-
Excellent communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field

Preferred Skills

Master’s degree or higher in a relevant discipline

Experience with public sector or government IT environments

Knowledge of MLOps frameworks and AI governance best practices

Familiarity with responsible and ethical AI standards
