Systems Engineer Calibration

What you will be doing:
Lead development testing across engine dynamometers, powertrain/hub dynamometers, and physical vehicles to support system development and validation.
Utilize virtual vehicle analytical simulations to front-load calibration development and demonstrate system capability.
Conduct sensitivity studies to optimize the balance between emissions compliance, fuel economy, performance, and drivability; establish preferred values for control variables using a data-driven approach.
Synchronize the calibration of various sub-systems - including the engine, aftertreatment (TWC/GPF), transmission, and electric generator/motors - to ensure seamless integration and achievement of emissions targets.
Utilize Design of Experiments (DOE) methods to efficiently map complex multi-variable calibration spaces and define robust operating strategies.
Lead the setup and commissioning of prototype systems in both dyno and vehicle environments.
Perform system-level debugging and troubleshoot complex mechanical, electrical, and software issues.
Document and present calibration progress, trade-off results, and regulatory compliance status to program leadership and cross-functional teams.
Understand and communicate with the team regarding exhaust gas chemical reactions (Chemical Engineering competency).
Apply statistical methods for data analysis and quality control.
Understand electrical systems and requirements for various engine control devices, including power distribution and architecture and 48V system concepts.
Apply a higher-level understanding of vehicle control and electrical systems to consider balances and trade-offs for system-level attributes, balancing the needs of the entire vehicle in the context of emissions control.
Manage multi-year projects for vehicle system design and testing, including parts procurement, test resource management and timing, and regular status reporting to management.
Apply understanding of how vehicle engines and powertrains function, from conventional ICE to various hybrid configurations.
Develop and demonstrate system-level capabilities to achieve future emissions targets (SULEV20, SULEV15, and SULEV10) for gasoline-powered Internal Combustion Engines (ICE), Hybrid (HEV), and Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) applications.
Bridge the gap between virtual simulation and physical validation, leading the development of calibration strategies that balance regulatory compliance with vehicle attributes such as fuel economy and drivability.
What you'll need to be successful

Essential:
-
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related technical field.
-
5+ years of experience in powertrain calibration, with a specific focus on gasoline emissions and/or electrified propulsion systems (HEV/PHEV).

Proficiency with industry-standard calibration tools (e.g., ATI Vision, ETAS INCA, or Vector CANape) and CAN communication protocols.
-
Deep understanding of global emissions regulatory requirements and test procedures, specifically SULEV20, SULEV15, and SULEV10 standards.

Demonstrated mechanical and electrical (wiring) skills for prototype vehicle/bench setup and hardware-in-the-loop troubleshooting.

Experience with data acquisition (DAQ) systems and various testing environments, including engine/chassis dynamometers.

Experience in data engineering and statistical validation, with a proven track record of analyzing large-scale datasets to identify statistically significant trends.

Ability to understand and communicate with the team regarding exhaust gas chemical reactions.

Knowledge of statistical methods for data analysis and quality control.

Ability to understand electrical systems and requirements for various engine control devices, including power distribution and architecture and 48V system concepts.

Higher-level understanding of vehicle control and electrical systems with ability to consider balances and trade-offs for system-level attributes in the context of emissions control.

Ability to manage multi-year projects for vehicle system design and testing, including parts procurement, test resource management and timing, and regular status reporting to management.

Understanding of how vehicle engines and powertrains function, from conventional ICE to various hybrid configurations.

Preferred:
-
Master's or PhD in Engineering with a focus on Thermal-Fluids, Controls, or Power Electronics.

Expertise in the design and validation of exhaust aftertreatment systems.
-
Experience with MATLAB/Simulink and advanced DOE optimization software (e.g., AVL ASCMO, Model-Based Calibration Toolbox).

Specific experience in developing hybrid energy management strategies and engine start/stop emissions control.
-
Proven ability to lead cross-functional technical reviews and mentor junior calibration engineers.

Experience conducting vehicle-level, engine-only, and powertrain testing to investigate, develop, and demonstrate emissions compliance with varied aftertreatment systems.

Understanding of current emissions regulations and familiarity with emerging regulations, with ability to understand and adapt to them.

Understanding of current powertrain offerings and various hybrid configurations (MHT, PowerSplit, full EREV) and ability to adapt control strategy and calibration to different operating conditions of each configuration.

Understanding of chemical reactions in relation to aftertreatment exhaust gas (NOx, HCs, CO, Sulfur, O2, etc.).

Self-motivated with the ability to develop a project from concept phase through development to report-out and conclusion.

Experience with data analysis techniques and ability to model trends from large data sets; ability to use or create models to predict vehicle and emissions attribute performance during experiment definition phases.

Understanding of current and proposed future emissions regulations (Environmental Compliance).

MATLAB or equivalent (e.g., Python) experience to process large data sets and predict performance of engine and aftertreatment components.
