Backend Engineer

Role Overview: Snapfix is seeking a versatile Backend Engineer proficient in PHP, Python, and Node to contribute to building technical foundations for AI-powered features. As a Backend Engineer at Snapfix, you will enhance and scale existing systems, design new services, collaborate with an international engineering team, mentor peers, and uphold high standards for quality, reliability, and developer experience. Key Responsibilities: - Own & evolve our backend: - Improve performance, reliability, and maintainability of existing PHP and Python services through activities such as refactors, migrations, test coverage enhancement, resilience enhancement, and cost/performance tuning. - Build new services & APIs: - Design, implement, and operate secure, well-documented REST endpoints and event-driven systems that are favored by mobile and web applications. - Lay the AI foundations: - Establish data pipelines and storage for embeddings & retrieval, build RAG pipelines, prompt/response evaluation, guardrails, and model-orchestration layers, and integrate hosted LLMs and/or self-hosted inference with observability and cost controls. - Technical leadership: - Lead projects, decompose scope, make build-vs-buy decisions, and mentor engineers through reviews, pairing, and design documentation. - Quality & DevEx: - Elevate standards in testing, CI/CD, observability, and documentation, and advocate secure-by-default practices. - Cross-functional collaboration: - Collaborate with Product, Design, and Customer teams to deliver clear, practical solutions that users adopt swiftly. - DevOps: - Contribute to infra as code, containerization, and runtime operations in conjunction with the platform team. Qualifications Required: - 5+ years of experience in building and operating production backend systems. - Strong proficiency in PHP and Node.js, with an openness to learning new languages. - Proficiency in relational databases (MySQL), caching (Redis), and queues/streams (e.g. SQS, Kafka). - Demonstrated ability to craft clean APIs, data models, and service boundaries, with familiarity in event-driven and asynchronous patterns. - Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred), Docker, and CI/CD (e.g. GitHub Actions). - Experience in delivering AI-enabled features, including LLM APIs, embeddings/vector stores, retrieval pipelines, prompt/tooling frameworks, and evaluation/metrics. - Sound fundamentals in testing, security, privacy, monitoring/alerting (e.g. Datadog). - Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with proficiency in collaborating across time zones. - Proven track record of mentoring or leading small squads. Additional Details: This role can be performed remotely within India or at Snapfix headquarters in Ahmedabad. Note: Nice-to-have skills include expertise in Kubernetes and Terraform, cost/performance optimization at scale, domain knowledge in maintenance/facilities or mobile-centric workflows, and observability for ML/LLM systems.
