As a Backend Engineer (Coding Agent Experience) at Mercor, your main role will be to utilize frontier AI coding agents for completing and evaluating complex engineering tasks. You will be responsible for reviewing model-generated code for correctness, quality, maintainability, and performance. Your tasks will also include identifying bugs, edge cases, and failure modes in model outputs, as well as comparing outputs from multiple frontier models to assess their strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, you will apply professional engineering judgment to realistic backend engineering scenarios, working independently and asynchronously to meet deadlines while improving AI model performance. Key Responsibilities: - Use frontier AI coding agents for completing and evaluating complex engineering tasks - Review model-generated code for correctness, quality, maintainability, and performance - Identify bugs, edge cases, and failure modes in model outputs - Compare outputs from multiple frontier models and assess their strengths and weaknesses - Apply professional engineering judgment to realistic backend engineering scenarios - Work independently and asynchronously to meet deadlines while improving AI model performance Qualifications: Must-Have: - 2+ years of professional backend engineering experience - Experience building APIs, distributed systems, microservices, backend platforms, or databases - Regular use of AI coding agents such as Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, Windsurf, Gemini CLI, or similar tools - Ability to evaluate model-generated code and identify bugs, edge cases, and architectural tradeoffs Preferred: - Experience working on large-scale production systems If you are interested in this opportunity, you can expect compensation of $85 per hour for this contract position. The compensation is tied to accepted work, with $400 per accepted task. Typical tasks take approximately 13 hours after ramp-up, and there are no fixed task limits.
