Assistant Department Manager – Transmission (Minneapolis) Permanent Role • Excellent Benefits • Competitive Compensation • Significant Room for Growth We are seeking an Assistant Department Manager – Transmission to support a growing engineering team in the Upper Midwest region. This permanent leadership position combines technical transmission design responsibilities with people leadership, team development, and department‑level operational support. About the Role The Assistant Department Manager plays a key role in guiding interns, designers, and engineers, ensuring high-quality performance, effective staffing, strong team culture, and consistent professional growth across the transmission engineering discipline. This role also contributes to process improvements, business initiatives, team cohesion, and operational efficiency. Key Responsibilities Promote and advocate for a strong safety culture within the department. Foster a positive, collaborative, inclusive work environment that emphasizes quality, teamwork, and professional growth. Recruit, onboard, develop, train, and retain interns and engineers at multiple levels. Provide coaching, mentorship, and performance management, including 90‑day reviews, annual appraisals, mid‑year reviews, and improvement plans. Coordinate staffing, team assignments, and resource planning to ensure cost‑effective project execution. Identify and support training needs and collaborate with other groups on shared training initiatives. Assist in developing new client relationships and maintaining existing ones. Support proposal development and review activities. Promote team engagement, conflict resolution, ownership mindset, and healthy work‑life balance. Participate in business initiatives to increase efficiency, profitability, and process improvements. Encourage innovation through the use of tools, technology, and process enhancements. Provide input on productivity, budgets, and quality improvement opportunities. Communicate organizational goals and expectations clearly to team members. Approve timecards and help ensure billable targets are met. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, environmental science, construction management, or a related field. Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong interpersonal and analytical problem‑solving abilities. Ability to present complex information to colleagues, management, and stakeholders. Experience giving and receiving performance feedback. Familiarity with tools such as Pivot Tables, Data Models, Office 365 apps, or similar data/efficiency tools. Demonstrated ability to influence, lead, and support organizational change. Professional Engineering (PE) license preferred. A history of strong performance and leadership contributions.
