About the role
Role Overview: You will be a part of the Data Management Enablement (DME) Center of Excellence (COE) at Northern Trust, focusing on supporting enterprise data governance practices across the organization. Your role as an associate involves acting as a governance advisor and enablement partner, assisting business and data stakeholders in enhancing data management, governance, and retention processes. The emphasis will be on analysis, governance oversight, and stakeholder support rather than technical development. Your contribution will be instrumental in driving the adoption of data governance standards, improving data quality, and ensuring alignment with records management and data retention requirements. Key Responsibilities: - Partner with data owners and stewards to analyze data issues and enhance data quality practices. - Support the definition and monitoring of data quality rules according to business needs. - Conduct data analysis, validation checks, and issue investigations to identify root causes and facilitate resolution. - Provide insights and recommendations to strengthen data governance controls. - Assist in organizing and maintaining business metadata and data definitions. - Ensure proper classification, documentation, and alignment of data assets to governance standards. - Help stakeholders comprehend data flows and lineage to enhance transparency and trust. - Support and enhance governance workflows such as approvals, issue management, certifications, and lifecycle processes. - Improve traceability, auditability, and consistency of governance processes. - Provide day-to-day support to users on governance tools and processes. - Act as a trusted advisor to business and data teams, guiding them on governance best practices. - Conduct training sessions, office hours, and user support to increase adoption. - Translate business needs into practical governance solutions and improvements. - Ensure governance practices align with enterprise records management and retention policies. - Support data classification, retention scheduling, and defensible disposition processes. - Collaborate with compliance and legal teams to ensure data management complies with regulatory and internal retention requirements. - Promote awareness and adoption of records management standards across data domains. - Support audit readiness and regulatory compliance (e.g., BCBS 239, GDPR, internal policies). - Contribute to governance reporting and evidence tracking. - Identify opportunities to enhance governance processes, controls, and efficiency. - Support emerging capabilities such as AI-assisted data classification and governance insights. Qualifications Required: - Bachelors degree in a relevant field. - 1013 years of experience in data governance, data management, data quality, or records management. - Strong understanding of data governance frameworks and operating models. - Experience supporting metadata, data quality, lineage, and governance processes. - Solid knowledge of records management and data retention principles. - Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data issues and recommend solutions. - Proven experience working with business stakeholders, data stewards, and control functions. - Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills. - Ability to educate, influence, and drive adoption of governance practices.
