Role Summary (Read Carefully) This role is for a battle-tested DBA who has designed, scaled, and stabilized databases powering live payment systems. You are expected to own data reliability, performance, and availability from Day 1 not advise, not observe, not set standards. If you havent personally handled production DB outages, scale failures, and data consistency issues in high-TPS systems, this role is not a fit. Non-Negotiable Expectations - Hands-on MongoDB & MySQL DBA work (design + operations) - Experience supporting real-time payment workloads - Has handled high write throughput, spikes, and peak events - Comfortable working without DB vendors or long KT cycles - Owns data issues end-to-end design run recover Core Responsibilities 1. End-to-End Database Ownership - Own architecture, configuration, performance, and stability - Design databases for: - High availability - Low latency - Zero/near-zero data loss - Decide on sharding, replication, indexing, and storage strategies 2. MongoDB Deep Hands-On (Mandatory) - Design & manage: - Replica sets - Sharded clusters - Hands-on experience with: - Shard key design (critical) - Index optimization for heavy writes - Handling chunk migrations & hotspots - Manage schema evolution in production systems - Tune MongoDB for payment-grade workloads 3. MySQL Transactional & Financial Data - Own MySQL for: - Ledger - Settlement - Reconciliation - Audit data - Expertise in: - Query optimization - Index strategy - Locking & deadlock handling - Read/write split & replication - Design for data integrity and consistency 4. Payments-Specific Data Challenges Must have hands-on experience handling: - Idempotency & duplicate transaction prevention - Exactly-once / at-least-once data handling - Reversals, refunds, and adjustments - Large reconciliation & settlement batches - Audit trails & traceability (RBI / PCI expectations) 5. Production Stability, DR & Recovery - Design and test: - Backup & restore strategies - Point-in-time recovery - Cross-region DR - Lead live DR drills and failovers - Own RCA for DB-related incidents - Ensure minimal MTTR during production issues 6. Performance, Scale & Cost Optimization - Tune DBs for: - High TPS - Peak traffic windows - Low p99 latency - Proactively plan: - Capacity - Storage growth - Cost optimization (cloud spend) - Remove DB bottlenecks before they hit production Mandatory Technical Skills (No Exceptions) Databases - MongoDB (expert-level) - MySQL (expert-level) Ops & Tooling - Hands-on with: - Monitoring & alerting - Slow query analysis - Performance dashboards - Automation using scripts / tools (backup, health checks) Cloud & Infra - DBs on AWS (RDS, EC2-based Mongo setups) - Understanding of Kubernetes-based DB deployments - Security hardening, access controls, secrets management Security, Compliance & Controls - Experience supporting PCI-DSS environments - Strong grip on: - Data encryption (at rest & in transit) - Role-based DB access - Audit logs & compliance evidence - Comfortable working with InfoSec & auditors What Disqualifies a Candidate - Mostly advisory / standards-only DBA roles - Limited exposure to payments or financial transactions - Mongo OR MySQL (must be robust in both) - No ownership of production incidents or DR - Depends on vendor-managed DB teams Ideal Background - 1216 years total DBA experience - Payments Fintech / Gateway / Bank / Wallet / Core Banking - Has supported systems processing millions of transactions daily - Has lived through: - Data corruption scares - Scale-induced outages - Regulatory audits - Tight recovery timelines Role Summary (Read Carefully) This role is for a battle-tested DBA who has designed, scaled, and stabilized databases powering live payment systems.
