As a Cybersecurity Applications Engineer, you will be responsible for the development, testing, commissioning and operation of cybersecurity features/systems for Tesla Energy projects across the Asia-Pacific region. You will work with global cross-functional teams spanning SCADA, Network Operations, SW/HW development, Project Engineering, and Sales Engineering to deliver robust, compliant cybersecurity solutions. We’re looking for a flexible, collaborative engineer with a passion for sustainable energy and the ability to contribute to diverse technical challenges.
What You’ll Do
- Conduct security assessments against regional regulations and industry standards, including the Security of Critical Infrastructure (SOCI) Act 2018, the Australian Energy Sector Cyber Security Framework (AESCSF), and IEC 62443.
- Provide solutions engineering support by engaging with internal Business Development teams and directly interfacing with external customer teams to evaluate cybersecurity requirements during contracting and negotiation phases, and responding to customer RFIs and RFQs for regional projects. Develop and deploy monitoring tools and dashboards to enhance cybersecurity features and service efficiency for complex utility-scale battery projects.
- Provide technical support both internally and externally with customers throughout the sales and deployment of Tesla products into new and complex applications across the region.
- Run day-to-day cybersecurity operations for Tesla Energy deployments across Australia and the Asia-Pacific region, ensuring high uptime, reliability, and continuous security posture.
- Assist with scheduled security activities including tabletop exercises, patch management cycles, and vulnerability remediation plans.
- Produce technical documentation for mixed audiences, including technical briefs, assessment reports, security guides, and compliance documentation.
What You’ll Bring
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, or a related engineering discipline with 6+ years of work experience; or equivalent experience and evidence of exceptional ability.
- Strong knowledge of cybersecurity for industrial control systems. Familiar with Australian and international energy industry standards such as the SOCI Act, AESCSF, IEC 62443 (including 2-1, 3-2, and 4-2), and ISO 27001.
- Experience with security operations including patch management, vulnerability assessments, threat modelling, and risk assessments for critical infrastructure.
- Experience with deploying and managing virtual or physical servers.
- Experience with Windows and Linux operating systems and automation.
- Experience operating in OT/ICS or critical infrastructure environments, with a strong understanding of the unique challenges encountered in these environments.
- Experience with implementing industry-standard cybersecurity requirements: DMZ, jump/proxy servers, firewall rules, network segmentation, and intrusion detection/prevention systems.
- Skilled with automation and familiarity with programming languages such as Python, C, C++, Rust, Go, or similar.
- Exceptional communications skills and experience working and coordinating across distributed teams.
Desirable Attributes
- Certified security professional credentials (e.g., CISSP, GICSP, GRID, CISM, CASP+, GIAC, CAP, or equivalent).
- Prior experience working in an OEM in product, project or compliance roles requiring interpretation of regulatory requirements.
- Experience working with Australian energy market participants (AEMO, network operators, energy retailers) and familiarity with regional contractual cybersecurity obligations.
- Familiarity with China regulation and market participation requirements.
- Experience with cybersecurity vulnerability scanning tools and penetration testing.
- Networking-related certifications (CCNA, CCNP, or equivalent).
- Willingness to travel within Australia and internationally between Tesla facilities, customer sites, and certification laboratories.
