Role: OpenShift Platform Engineer

CVS

Remote

Contract to Hire

What will win: Experience installing version 4x with UPI/IPI, currently they are using Version 4.12

Received further detail directly from the manager on what they are looking for:

Must have expertise and experience installing and/or updating Red Hat’s OpenShift Container Platform I think at this point this is an absolute must have; if they have no experience installing OpenShift 4.x then they should not be considered for the position We are again looking for specific experience with installing OpenShift Container Platform using either User Provisioned Infrastructure (UPI) or Installer Provisioned Infrastructure (IPI) methods for ON PREM or CLOUD services (AZURE, AWS, GCP) We are open to other methods of installation like something for us down the line with Microsoft Azure Red Hat OpenShift, but ultimately we need someone right now with UPI/IPI This provides a wealth of detail for us to know they for sure can be plugged right into the craziness here because they have the experience working with these cloud platforms, working with the dependent teams, already know the prerequisites needed to be in place for the install, and then ultimately knowing how to do the install and for sure know how OpenShift works Upgrading is just as important too, there is a process that they must follow and is a big boy responsibility and great if they have done it If they pass the above, then we can start gauging their Day 2 support stuff for OpenShift: Do they have the experience modifying infrastructure to adhere to best practices and security policies? Do they have the experience of adding capacity such as adding more servers to the clusters that they are already familiar with installing? Do they have the experience troubleshooting issues around the platform in case something breaks? Upgrading clusters also comes in here for Day 2 support, great stuff if they have the experience Can they also support these activities via automation so they are not spending hours or many valuable minutes doing it manually, but instead working smart and writing a script to do something automatically? And then other day-to-day things are around supporting developers and onboarding applications from these teams to the OpenShift clusters: This involves advising how they should size the applications and advising developers on proper standards that we have setup around DevOps pipelines This means they have the experience working with multiple teams and can actually manage the OpenShift clusters and advise properly and understand integrations with other systems Also involves troubleshooting anything on the platform specifically with the developers, not necessarily their application specific issues, but working with the developers and ensuring everything is getting on boarded fine Last but not least, whenever we have time we are looking for innovation from these guys (extra bonus!): Adding more automation such as TLS certificate auto renewals for example (TLS certificates are a required component in all web infrastructure) Making more strategic configuration changes that help streamline processes and prevent issues down the line Working with relative teams to improve collaboration Setting up home automation and playing in labs on their spare time (just something cool that does technically help with the job as well 😊)Additional Notes from call:

Questions asked:

Do you have experience installing OpenShift and what methods do you install with?

-The two that they’re looking for are UPI and IPI

How do you do an IPI install?

-Expects them to tell him the steps

-CLI tools, work with an azure or cloud engineer to get resources (networks, permissions), take all of that and configure it in and run it in an install config, provision everything

Day 2 things:

What type of things do you do after a cluster is stood up?

More workload that comes on that developers push onto the platform- add more servers- computer memory- adds a bigger bucket

How would you add more nodes to the platform?

They should know very specific Kubernetes terms: it’s a machine set etc.

How do you troubleshoot applications that are in that bucket?

Security comes to you “you’re not in adherence to our policies” then we have to work with them- how do you get that remediated? Specifics

Knowledge of other tools around the platform: devops, gitops, ArgoCD
