Senior Backend Software Engineer - Ruby on Rails

As a Senior Software Engineer specializing in Ruby on Rails, you will play a crucial role in optimizing the in-product, customer, and developer experience for representing Zendesk's Users. Your primary responsibility will be to contribute to the core code of Zendesk's support product, ensuring that your work reaches millions of people every day. You will work closely with the Tech Lead to design and implement complete solutions, participate in technical discussions with global engineering teams, and prioritize work to balance feature delivery and tech debt management. Key Responsibilities: - Contribute to the core codebase of Zendesk's support product, impacting millions of users daily - Take ownership of features, design and implement solutions in collaboration with the Tech Lead - Engage in technical discussions with cross-functional teams and partners to facilitate decision-making - Break down complex features into manageable tasks for incremental feedback cycles - Prioritize and estimate work, balancing feature delivery and tech debt management - Participate in pairing sessions, code reviews, and continuous self-improvement activities - Collaborate with designers and product managers to shape the future of the product - Assist in triaging customer issues alongside Product Managers - Support operational aspects of services in Production - Enhance observability, performance, reliability, and security of services Qualifications Required: - Proficiency in Ruby on Rails, with experience in one of the largest Ruby on Rails codebases globally - Strong expertise in MySQL or similar databases, optimizing performance for high-traffic environments - Track record of delivering large-scale, high-quality, and resilient web systems - Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills in English - Ability to articulate complex technical concepts clearly to engineers and non-technical partners - Experience in problem-solving across multiple systems - Skilled in coaching engineers, leading discussions, and fostering collaboration - Capacity to influence, inspire, and mentor others - Comfortable working with diverse technologies and codebases Additionally, the company is in the process of establishing a Product Development Center of Excellence in Pune, offering a unique opportunity to contribute to the growth and success of the center.
