Position Summary: Join athenahealth as a Lead Network Engineer supporting the Chennai site, with flexibility to travel to Pune or Bangalore as needed. In this role, you will serve as the primary escalation point for complex network issues across wireless, LAN, WAN, and security environments. You will also help lead incident response, support design and upgrade work, and collaborate with vendors and technical teams across a multi-vendor global network environment. This role reports to the network engineering leadership team. About the Team: The network engineering team supports reliable connectivity and secure access across athenahealths global environments. The team manages infrastructure across wireless, switching, routing, VPN, firewalls, and related network services, and partners with vendor and peer teams to resolve issues and support ongoing improvements. The work includes incident response, capacity planning, monitoring, and change coordination in a complex enterprise environment. This role plays a key part in supporting the Chennai site and contributing to broader network operations and strategy. Essential Job Responsibilities: Serve as the primary escalation point for Chennai site network issues across LAN, WAN, WLAN, and security layers. Install, configure, upgrade, and maintain networking and security equipment in a multi-vendor environment. Lead troubleshooting of complex incidents involving wireless, firewall, VPN, routing, and switching issues. Participate in a 24x7 on-call rotation and provide onsite leadership during critical events. Coordinate with service providers, hardware and software vendors, and technical support partners to resolve issues. Track, report, and address network capacity and performance concerns. Provision and manage site-to-site IPsec VPNs and WAN connectivity with carriers and service providers. Follow IT change control and incident management practices. Collaborate with peer engineering teams on network design, automation, and long-term strategy. Use AI-enabled tools to help analyze incident patterns, summarize troubleshooting findings, and support documentation or capacity planning work, while validating outputs before use in operational decisions. Additional Job Responsibilities: Provide onsite support in Bangalore or Pune when needed for major incidents or implementations. Support network design reviews and implementation planning. Contribute to process improvements and operational consistency. Assist with knowledge sharing and mentoring across the team. Help maintain accurate documentation for network systems and procedures. Expected Education & Experience: Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience. 10+ years of professional experience in network engineering, including production 24x7 environments. Experience with wireless implementation, operations, and troubleshooting; Aruba experience preferred. Strong multi-vendor experience with Juniper, Aruba, Palo Alto, Dell SONiC, and VeloCloud. Hands-on experience with Palo Alto firewalls and Global Protect preferred. Deep understanding of TCP/IP, routing, and switching protocols. Experience with firewall, VPN, and network security technologies. Familiarity with public and private cloud networking. Working knowledge of Linux networking troubleshooting. Understanding of structured cabling standards and physical layer troubleshooting. Hands-on experience with Ansible, Git, Python, and EVPN/VXLAN preferred. Knowledge of macOS and Windows at the operating system level is an advantage. Strong analytical, communication, and stakeholder coordination skills.
