About the role
As a Junior Database Administrator specializing in MySQL and PostgreSQL monitoring, your role involves supporting the operation and maintenance of databases under the guidance of senior DBAs. Your responsibilities include: - Assisting in the day-to-day administration of MySQL and PostgreSQL databases across development, test, and production environments. - Monitoring database health, availability, and performance with guidance from senior DBAs. - Performing routine DBA tasks such as user and role management, schema changes, basic maintenance activities, log review, and alert investigation. - Supporting database start/stop, backups, restores, and basic recovery tasks. Your primary skill set will focus on monitoring setup and alerting, where you will be responsible for: - Setting up and maintaining database monitoring. - Configuring and tuning alerts for critical metrics like CPU, memory, disk usage, database availability, replication health, slow queries, and connection counts. - Analyzing alerts, performing initial troubleshooting, and escalating issues when necessary. - Collaborating with senior DBAs to enhance alert accuracy and reduce noise. - Maintaining monitoring dashboards and generating basic performance reports. Additionally, you will be expected to work in Linux environments to manage and support database systems using common Linux commands for tasks such as file system navigation, log analysis, and process and disk usage monitoring. Qualifications required for this role include: - Around 1 year of experience working with MySQL and/or PostgreSQL. - Basic understanding of relational database fundamentals. - Familiarity with Linux operating systems and standard Linux commands. - Basic understanding of SQL queries (Select, Insert, Update, Delete). - Positive problem-solving and communication skills. Nice-to-have skills for this role include exposure to MSSQL, basic scripting knowledge in Bash or Python, and awareness of cloud databases such as AWS or Azure.
