As a Firmware Engineer at Bytebeam, you will be responsible for owning the firmware for automotive telematics devices from end to end. You will lead a small firmware team and play a crucial role in ensuring the reliability and robustness of the firmware across various products. Your responsibilities will include: - Firmware Architecture and Platform Ownership: - Designing clean, reusable firmware structure across products. - Making key technical decisions on RTOS vs. bare-metal, memory, power states, partitioning, and OTA strategy. - Owning the bootloader, firmware update/OTA path, versioning, and recovery behavior. - Hands-on Firmware Development: - Writing production firmware in C/C++ for resource-constrained microcontrollers. - Developing drivers and integration for various components like cellular/LTE modems, GNSS, Bluetooth/BLE, CAN/OBD, sensors, storage, and power management. - Implementing device communication over multiple interfaces and building fault-tolerant behavior for devices in vehicles. - Bring-up, Integration, and Debugging: - Leading board bring-up and power-on validation. - Driving hardware-software integration and root-cause analysis. - Debugging field and production issues, and enhancing on-device observability and diagnostics. - Technical Leadership and Mentoring: - Setting and maintaining engineering standards through code reviews and design reviews. - Mentoring firmware engineers and interns to raise the quality of the team's output. - Owning firmware quality practices, version control, testing, and release discipline. - Cross-Functional Delivery: - Collaborating with hardware and cloud teams on device-cloud workflows. - Partnering with validation on test strategy and release readiness. - Closing the loop between field behavior, telemetry, and firmware revisions. In addition to the above responsibilities, the must-have skills for this role include: - 6+ years of hands-on embedded firmware development in C/C++ - Mastery of microcontrollers and RTOS - CI/CD for firmware - Automotive coding standards and functional safety awareness - Experience with communication interfaces and protocols - Strong debugging skills and engineering hygiene The ideal candidate for this position is a strong firmware engineer who is passionate about owning firmware end to end, leading a team, and ensuring the codebase remains clean and reliable in real-world scenarios. If you have experience in automotive or telematics firmware, OTA update systems, secure boot, and firmware security, it would be a strong plus. Send us an example of a firmware problem you owned on a real product to showcase your skills and experience.
