Overview
The Electrical Senior Design Engineer – Solar & BESS will serve as the technical authority for the electrical engineering and system integration of utility-scale or C&I solar PV and Battery Energy Storage Systems. This role focuses on the complex electrical architecture of hybrid plants—spanning from DC generation and electrochemical storage up to high-voltage grid substations. You will be responsible for ensuring that all electrical designs are optimized for efficiency, safety, and absolute compliance with utility grid codes.
Key Responsibilities
Advanced Electrical Engineering & System Architecture
Electrical Architecture: Design complex AC-coupled and DC-coupled utility-scale Solar-plus-BESS plant topologies.
Core Calculations: Perform and validate critical electrical calculations including AC/DC cable sizing, ampacity, voltage drop, transformer sizing, earthing/grounding grids, and lightning protection.
Power System Analysis: Conduct or supervise system studies using software like load flow analysis, short-circuit studies, relay coordination, and arc flash analysis.
Engineering Deliverables: Author and review comprehensive electrical engineering packages: Single Line Diagrams (SLD), Three Line Diagrams (3LD), schematic drawings for control & protection, and cable trench/routing layouts.
Equipment Selection & Technical Procurement
Specification Authoring: Define technical specifications and datasheets for key electrical equipment: Power Conversion Systems (PCS), Central/String Inverters, MV/HV Transformers, Switchgears, Ring Main Units (RMU), and Battery Enclosures.
Vendor Qualification: Lead the technical evaluation of bids from OEMs and EPC contractors. Review and approve vendor drawings (e.g., GA drawings, control schematics) to ensure alignment with project requirements.
BOM Management: Ownership of the electrical Bill of Materials (BOM) and Bill of Quantities (BOQ) from the conceptual phase to Good-for-Construction (GFC).
Substation, Interconnection & Grid Compliance
Grid Interconnection: Lead the technical design of the pooling substation and overhead/underground transmission line interfaces up to the Point of Interconnection (POI).
Compliance & Standards: Ensure all designs comply strictly with regional Grid Codes, utility interconnect mandates, and international standards such as IEEE 1547, UL 9540/9540A, NFPA 855, IEC 62933, and local electrical codes.
Protection & Control: Design protection schemes for the BESS and Solar farm interface, defining settings for numerical protection relays.
Cross-Functional Leadership
Interface Coordination: Manage critical electrical interfaces between the PV system, BESS containers, Energy Management System (EMS), SCADA, and the utility substation.
Mentorship & Quality Control: Establish internal electrical design standards, templates, and checklists. Peer-review the work of junior engineers and CAD designers to ensure zero-error delivery.
Required Skills & Qualifications
Technical Competencies
Software Mastery: Expert proficiency in AutoCAD and PVsyst. Hands-on experience with power system simulation software like ETAP, CYME, or DigSILENT / PSCAD is highly critical.
BESS Engineering: Deep understanding of battery container internal electrical architecture, auxiliary power distribution, HVAC/thermal load impacts, and fire suppression integration.
Standards Knowledge: Strong familiarity with high-voltage and medium-voltage substation design practices.
Soft Skills
Strong technical leadership capability with an ability to justify design choices to regulatory bodies and high-profile clients.
Exceptionally detail-oriented with a rigorous focus on safety, reliability, and code compliance.
Effective communication skills to bridge the gap between software developers (EMS/SCADA) and physical site construction teams.
