Connect with Us Vacancy Details Position Type: Administrative and Central Office Office Title/Functional Title: Data and Systems Analyst, OAG - 26807 Civil Service Title: City Research Scientist Level: L2 Division/Office: Office of Auditor General Borough: Brooklyn Posting End Date: 08/10/2026 Description: Position Summary: Under the direction of the Chief of Data and Operations, the Data and Systems Analyst will develop an understanding of New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) data systems, and conduct data analysis research and analytic work that will assist in the Office of Auditor General (OAG)’s identification of areas for audit or collaboration with NYCPS offices and/or divisions. The Data and Systems Analyst will provide support in enhancing procedures that allow internal NYCPS offices to self-audit their programs, automate audit processes, and design reports that summarize the work of each audit. The position will require collaboration with managers and staff across OAG. This role also supports OAG’s strategic transition toward more predictive and preventive auditing by leveraging data analytics, automation, and emerging technologies to proactively identify risks and strengthen internal controls across the NYCPS. Performs related work. Reports to: Chief of Data and Operations Direct Reports: N/A Key Relationships: OAG Directors, OAG Managers and DIIT. Responsibilities Assist OAG Audit Directors to define audit procedures that target appropriate risks and controls, as well as outline appropriate audit objectives. Work with OAG colleagues to improve and enhance NYCPS’s control environments. Identify strategies and system controls for stakeholders to consider and implement that promote accuracy and appropriateness of records and data within NYCPS systems. Collaborate with database developers and programmers to evaluate existing systems, and propose system or process improvements. Identify database requirements through detailed analysis of existing applications and operations. Design stored procedures, triggers, and complex analytic queries on large data sets; retrieve data using Cognos and other reporting tools. Support the management of OAG databases; coordinate and support updates to databases; manage permissions and other related tasks associated with database administration. Support the development of training and provide information to OAG staff on databases on an as-needed basis. Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, and establishing personal networks throughout the Department. Maintain records and prepare written analyses, documentation, and presentations summarizing trends and research. Support OAG’s shift toward predictive and preventive auditing by developing analytic approaches to identify trends, anomalies, and emerging risks in NYCPS data systems. Collaborate with audit teams to incorporate data-driven insights into audit procedures, internal control assessments, and risk-based audit planning. Explore and evaluate opportunities to integrate automation and emerging technologies, including AI-assisted tools, into analytic and audit workflows. Contribute to improving data governance and data quality standards within OAG’s analytic processes and NYCPS’s broader control environment. Qualification Requirements: Minimum A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least a master's degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in "2" above. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in "1" and "2" above. Plus In addition to meeting the minimum requirements, individuals must have two additional years of relevant work experience. Preferred Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to work with large data sets. Knowledge of SQL programming, SQL Server, and Cognos. Expertise in data mining, data visualization, and supporting process improvement. Familiarity with operating systems; database management, maintenance, and security. Knowledge of Visual Basic for applications. Knowledge of NYCPS information security policies. Attention to detail; interpersonal, communication and presentation skills, including presenting technical information. Displays teamwork, integrity, and leadership. Demonstrated consistency in values, principles, and work ethics. Supports colleagues and values the contributions of others. Interest in applying automation and emerging technologies, including AI and machine learning tools, to improve audit and analytic workflows. Salary : $100,904 - $110,120 (Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not earn less than their current salary.)
