  • Job Summary

Role : Senior Network Engineer

IP / MPLS Core, Routing and Switching , OSPF, BGP , RIP, BNG, DHCP , L2 and L3 Protocols - worked with Telcos networks (Telstra, NBN, TPG, OPTUS or any Telco). Telco experience is a must.

We don't need Enterprise Networks (Banks etc - LAN, WAN, SDWAN etc)

The Senior Network Engineer is responsible for the end-to-end design, implementation, and optimisation of core IP networks for a telecommunications operator, spanning fixed services and 4G/5G mobile across multi-vendor environments (Cisco, Nokia, Juniper). The role combines deep routing expertise with hands-on delivery, ensuring high availability, scalability, and security of carrier-grade infrastructure.

Key responsibilities

Design, build, and optimise core IP/MPLS networks supporting fixed broadband and 4G/5G mobile services, including backbone, edge, and aggregation layers.

Architect and implement multi-vendor solutions using Cisco, Nokia, and Juniper platforms for routing, switching, and transport functions.

Configure and troubleshoot advanced routing protocols such as BGP, OSPF, IS-IS, and MPLS-based services (L3VPN, traffic engineering, segment routing) to ensure resilient and efficient routing.

Lead core network design for mobile operators, covering packet core, IP backbone, and interconnects with RAN, transmission, and data centre environments for 4G and 5G.

Deliver low-level design (LLD) and implementation plans from high-level architecture, including configuration templates and migration strategies.

Perform capacity planning, traffic engineering, and performance optimisation across fixed and 4G/5G mobile network domains.

Own complex fault management and troubleshooting, including routing instabilities, convergence issues, and multi-domain end-to-end service impacts.

Collaborate with architecture, planning, NOC, and operations teams to validate designs, support rollout, and ensure minimal disruption during changes.

Implement and maintain network security controls within the core, including routing security, DDoS mitigation, access control, and compliance with operator standards.

Produce and maintain detailed documentation: topology diagrams, design artefacts, configuration standards, and operational procedures for core network platforms.

Engage with vendors for solution design, feature validation, and software upgrades across Cisco, Nokia, and Juniper platforms.

Mentor and provide technical leadership to junior engineers, supporting project delivery and knowledge transfer on core network technologies.

Required technical skills

Expert knowledge of IP routing and switching in carrier-grade environments, including BGP, OSPF, IS-IS, MPLS, QoS, and IPv6.

Strong hands-on experience with Cisco, Nokia, and Juniper routers and switches in telco/ISP core and edge roles.

Proven experience designing and implementing core networks for fixed broadband and 4G/5G mobile services, including integration with packet core and transport.

Solid understanding of mobile IP concepts and routing for 4G/5G networks, including support for voice, data, and signalling traffic.

Experience with IP/MPLS backbone design, traffic engineering, and high-availability architectures (redundancy, fast reroute, convergence tuning).

Familiarity with network automation and provisioning tools (e.g., Ansible, Python, Cisco NSO) for configuration templating and change execution.

Strong skills in network monitoring and telemetry (SNMP, syslog, IPFIX, NMS systems) for proactive performance and fault management.

Experience and qualifications

10+ years’ experience in network engineering within a telecommunications operator, ISP, or carrier-grade environment, with a strong focus on core network design and implementation.

Demonstrated track record leading complex core network projects, migrations, and multi-vendor deployments.

Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications, Network Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline (or equivalent industry experience).

Professional certifications such as CCNP/CCIE (Cisco), NRS/NRP (Nokia), JNCIP/JNCIE (Juniper) are desirable but not mandatory where equivalent experience is demonstrated.

Personal attributes

Strong analytical and problem-solving capability, with the ability to resolve complex, multi-domain network issues under time pressure.

Clear and confident communicator, able to work with cross-functional teams, vendors, and business stakeholders at senior levels.

Self-driven, detail-oriented, and comfortable taking ownership of core network domains and major change activities.
