Role Overview: At VML, you will have the opportunity to work as a Cloud & Platform DBA/Database Reliability Engineer, where you will be responsible for operating, optimizing, and securing managed and self-managed databases that power high-traffic ecommerce sites. Your primary focus will be on AWS and GCP, with some support for hosted/on-prem databases. Your mission will be to ensure high availability, performance, security/compliance, and cost efficiency, especially during peak events. Key Responsibilities: - Operate managed databases (cloud) including AWS RDS/Aurora, Google Cloud SQL, DynamoDB, MongoDB, DB2, and Oracle. This involves tasks like indexing, query plan analysis, schema design, and connection pool tuning. - Build and support self-managed databases (hosted/on-prem/VMs) such as Oracle 19c, IBM DB2 LUW 9.5, MySQL/MariaDB, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB. Responsibilities include installation, patching, upgrades, backup/restore, and storage layout. - Implement high availability, resilience, and disaster recovery solutions for both cloud and self-managed databases. This includes utilizing technologies like Multi-AZ, read replicas, replication, and backup utilities. - Implement automation and change management processes using tools like Terraform, Ansible, and CI/CD for database changes. - Focus on observability and performance engineering by utilizing monitoring tools like CloudWatch, RDS Performance Insights, pg_stat_statements, and capacity planning for peak events. - Ensure security, compliance, and governance by following IAM best practices, managing secrets, and adhering to PCI-DSS and GDPR controls. - Manage cost and capacity stewardship by optimizing cloud resources and forecasting capacity for self-managed databases. - Collaborate on architecture decisions, ORM usage, and operational strategies. Provide guidance on schema evolution, caching strategies, and connection pools. - Participate in 24/7 on-call rotation, lead incident response, and support migrations between self-managed and managed services. Qualifications Required: - Hands-on experience with managed relational databases in AWS or GCP using MySQL or PostgreSQL. - Experience administering at least one self-managed enterprise RDBMS in Linux/Unix environments or a quick ramp-up capability. - Strong performance tuning skills and HA/DR expertise. - Automation mindset with knowledge of Terraform, Ansible, and CI/CD tools. - Understanding of security/compliance fundamentals and clear communication skills. - Additional knowledge of Oracle, DB2, PostgreSQL, MySQL internals, MongoDB, Redis, Memcached, Kafka, Kubernetes, analytics platforms, and legacy estate migrations is a plus.
