Position Overview Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Design Engineer to support the design and delivery of transportation and highway infrastructure projects. This role is ideal for a technically skilled civil engineer with extensive roadway design experience, strong problem-solving abilities, and a passion for mentoring junior engineers. The Senior Design Engineer will lead technical design efforts, prepare engineering plans and specifications, coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, and ensure projects are completed in compliance with applicable engineering standards, agency requirements, project schedules, and budgets. Key Responsibilities Lead the engineering design of transportation, roadway, highway, and municipal infrastructure projects.

Prepare and review roadway geometry, grading, drainage systems, stormwater management, utility coordination, maintenance of traffic (MOT), and ADA-compliant designs.

Develop engineering plans, specifications, quantity calculations, cost estimates, and construction documents.

Perform engineering calculations and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local agency design standards.

Coordinate with project managers, clients, regulatory agencies, utility companies, and subconsultants throughout all phases of project development.

Conduct quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) reviews of engineering plans, technical reports, and design calculations.

Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers, designers, and CAD technicians.

Participate in project meetings, technical reviews, client presentations, and multidisciplinary coordination efforts.

Support proposal preparation, technical documentation, and project pursuits as needed.

Provide engineering support during construction, including responding to RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and resolving design-related issues.

Ideal Experience & Background Successful candidates will demonstrate: Proven experience designing transportation, highway, roadway, and municipal infrastructure projects.

Strong knowledge of roadway geometric design, drainage systems, stormwater management, utility coordination, and roadway rehabilitation.

Experience working with state DOTs, tollway authorities, municipal agencies, and local governments.

Proficiency with Bentley OpenRoads Designer, MicroStation, AutoCAD Civil 3D, or similar transportation design software.

Experience preparing PS&E packages, engineering estimates, and construction documents.

Strong understanding of engineering standards, permitting requirements, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.

Excellent communication, leadership, analytical, and organizational skills.

Ability to manage multiple technical assignments while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field (required).

• Minimum 8+ years of transportation or civil engineering design experience.

• Professional Engineer (P.E.) license preferred or ability to obtain.

• Strong knowledge of transportation engineering principles, roadway design standards, and infrastructure project delivery.

• Experience with roadway drainage design software such as Bentley Drainage & Utilities, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, StormCAD, HY-8, or similar tools is preferred.

• Strong technical writing, project coordination, and problem-solving skills.
