Manager, Distributed Systems Engineering

Role Overview: Curately is looking for a Backend Engineering Manager to take charge of the technical direction, quality, and velocity of the backend team. This role requires not just project management skills but also a deep understanding of code, the ability to challenge architectural decisions, and a commitment to enhancing engineering excellence. As a leader, you will be responsible for building and managing a high-performing, fully remote team that consistently delivers results. Key Responsibilities: - Drive architectural decisions for the Java / Spring Boot microservices platform on AWS, Kubernetes, and Docker. - Lead the migration from Microsoft SQL Server to PostgreSQL with minimal disruption to production systems. - Manage the distributed systems infrastructure including Kafka event streaming, SQS messaging, Lambda functions, and third-party integrations. - Implement and enforce technical standards to ensure scalability, resilience, and maintainability of systems. - Cultivate a culture of rigorous code reviews, define engineering processes, and provide constructive feedback. - Lead, mentor, and grow a remote backend engineering team while fostering trust and accountability. - Prioritize tasks, balance demands, and communicate tradeoffs effectively with stakeholders. - Champion the use of AI-assisted development tools and establish standards for AI-generated code. - Stay informed about AI tooling advancements and incorporate relevant insights into team operations. Qualifications Required: - 7+ years of backend engineering experience, including 3+ years in a leadership role. - Proficiency in Java, Spring Boot, AWS services, Kubernetes, and Docker. - Hands-on experience with event-driven architectures and distributed systems. - Strong track record in code review culture, team management, and remote communication. - Ability to prioritize tasks, make tradeoffs, and communicate decisions clearly. - Experience with database management, migrations, and AI-assisted coding tools.
