Analytics Engineer (BigQuery, dbt) - Independent Contractor

Context Our client is migrating from legacy data sources to new sources in an environment where logic is split between dbt and BigQuery SQL. Documentation is incomplete, and part of the work requires reverse-engineering existing queries, understanding dataset dependencies, and validating differences between old and new outputs. Responsibilities Analyze existing data models, SQL queries, and dataset dependenciesWork across both dbt models and standalone BigQuery queriesInvestigate legacy logic and undocumented transformationsSupport migration from old sources to new sourcesReconcile structural and numerical differences between datasetsIdentify root causes of discrepancies and propose remediationDocument findings, assumptions, and transformation logicPartner with business stakeholders to validate whether outputs are coherent and usable Requirements Strong SQL expertiseHands-on experience with BigQueryHands-on experience with dbt (or equivalent)Strong understanding of data modeling and transformation logicExperience with data migration, reconciliation, or source-to-target mappingAbility to work independently in ambiguous, messy data environmentsSufficient business understanding to challenge and validate data outputs .
