Senior Embedded Developer Who We Are At Tor.ai Limited, we build Industrial IoT products that connect machines, devices, data and people across industries. Our solutions are used in areas such as electric vehicles, HVAC systems, battery packs, capital goods, construction equipment, energy monitoring, water monitoring and industrial automation. We combine IoT devices, embedded firmware, software applications and analytics platforms to help businesses improve efficiency, reliability and sustainability. Our mission is to connect 1 billion devices across industries and drive meaningful operational change. Working at Tor.ai means being part of a team that solves real industrial problems and builds products that are deployed in the field at scale. About the role As a Senior Embedded Developer, you will work with the Firmware Engineering team on embedded systems, firmware development and Embedded Linux-based device development for Tor.ais Industrial IoT devices. You will own complex firmware and embedded software modules across microcontroller-based products, Linux-based edge devices, communication modules, industrial protocols, diagnostics, OTA / FOTA, power optimization and field reliability. This role requires strong coding logic, hands-on embedded experience, Linux exposure, structured debugging ability and the maturity to guide junior developers. The candidate must understand that firmware and embedded software tested on limited devices must work reliably when deployed across hundreds or thousands of field devices. This is not a generic software development role. It is suited for candidates who want to build a long-term career in embedded systems and grow into technical leadership while remaining hands-on. Key Responsibilities Own complex embedded firmware and Embedded Linux modules for Industrial IoT products, gateways and edge devices from requirement understanding to release and field support. Contribute to technical design, architecture discussions and implementation approach for firmware, Embedded Linux components, communication modules, diagnostics, OTA / FOTA and device reliability features. Identify technical risks, dependencies, design gaps and regression impact early during development, review and release planning. Design and develop reusable firmware components, drivers, middleware, Linux services, utilities and debugging frameworks that can be used across products or platforms. Review and approve complex firmware / embedded software changes with focus on code quality, reliability, traceability, debuggability, maintainability and field impact. Implement and review firmware logic for communication, data handling, configuration, diagnostics, event logging, device state management, watchdog and recovery mechanisms. Develop and debug Embedded Linux user-space applications, services, scripts and utilities for device operation, diagnostics, provisioning and field support. Work on microcontroller peripherals and interfaces such as UART, SPI, I2C, ADC, PWM, GPIO, timers, RTC, RS-485, CAN, BLE, serial flash and cellular modules. Develop and debug industrial and IoT protocol logic such as CAN, CAN-J1939, Modbus RTU / TCP, MQTT, HTTP / REST, BACnet and SNMP where required by the product. Own or support OTA / FOTA flows, bootloader concepts, secure boot basics, rollback handling, power optimization and release safety mechanisms. Debug complex device-level, Linux-level and field-level issues using UART logs, JTAG / SWD, logic analyser, oscilloscope, Wireshark, tcpdump, system logs and protocol traces. Analyze recurring field failures, identify root cause, define systemic corrective actions and ensure fixes prevent repeat failures across deployed devices. Assess release readiness by reviewing test coverage, regression impact, known issues, rollback readiness, field risk and deployment dependencies. Mentor junior embedded developers through code reviews, design reviews, debugging guidance, documentation reviews and technical problem-solving support. Support basic scrum execution including sprint planning, task breakdown, effort estimation, progress tracking, dependency tracking and sprint closure for assigned modules. Work closely with hardware, software, QA, product and implementation teams for validation, deployment support, field RCA and technical closure. Follow and help improve firmware development processes, Git discipline, release discipline, review practices and documentation standards. Technology Exposure Platforms & Tools STM32CubeIDE, Git, JTAG / SWD, serial debugging tools, logic analyser, oscilloscope, Wireshark, tcpdump, Python / C scripts Embedded Linux Linux command line, shell scripting, systemd basics, system logs, process monitoring, service debugging, journalctl, ping, ss / netstat, ip / ifconfig, filesystem and boot flow understanding Microcontrollers & Interfaces STM32, ESP32, nRF52, Renesas, UART, SPI, I2C, ADC, PWM, GPIO, timers, RTC, RS-485, CAN, BLE, Serial NOR Flash, EEPROM, Simcom / Quectel / Telit cellular modules Protocols CAN, CAN-J1939, Modbus RTU / TCP, BACnet, MQTT, HTTP / REST, SNMP UDS / KWP2000 basics good to have Embedded Concepts Bare-metal firmware, FreeRTOS, Embedded Linux-based device development, Linux user-space applications, sensor integration, peripheral driver development, memory management, bootloader, OTA / FOTA, secure boot basics, rollback handling, protocol stack foundations, watchdog logic, diagnostics, health monitoring and field debugging Zephyr basics, device tree, kernel module exposure, OpenCPU and driver-level debugging added advantage Required Skills Strong programming skills in C / Embedded C, with good understanding of memory, pointers, structures, state machines, data handling and control flow. Strong hands-on experience in embedded firmware development on microcontroller-based systems. Hands-on exposure to Embedded Linux, Linux command line, shell scripting, system-level debugging and Linux user-space applications / services for embedded devices. Ability to design, review and own complex firmware / embedded software modules with focus on reliability, maintainability and field deployment impact. Good understanding of embedded systems, digital electronics, hardware interfaces, RTOS / bare-metal firmware and device-level constraints.
