API Gateway Engineer

Job Description

Design, implement, and operate APIs on IBM API Connect and Kong gateways

Build assemblies (policies, GatewayScript/XSLT), routing, rate limiting, auth (OAuth/JWT), mTLS

Implement CI/CD for gateway configs (GitOps), environments, and automated promotions

Configure catalogs, products, plans, subscriptions, and developer portal integrations

Observability: logging, metrics, tracing, analytics; SLOs and error budgets

Security hardening: WAF, threat protection, schema validation, zero trust, secrets management

Migrations: proxy/API gateway transitions (Kong ? APIC)

Troubleshoot performance, capacity, and reliability issues; conduct load tests

Partner with app teams, security, and networking (DNS, TLS, certificates, IP allowlists)

Requirements

• 5+ years in API gateways; 2+ years each with APIC and Kong

• Strong in REST/SOAP/OpenAPI, OAuth2/OIDC/JWT, mTLS/TLS, certificates (PEM/PFX/P12)

• Kong (OSS/Enterprise)

• IBM API Connect (v10): Assembly policies, DataPower, GatewayScript, XSLT, products/plans

• Infra: CI/CD (GitHub Actions/Jenkins)

• Observability: Splunk/ELK, Prometheus/Grafana
