About the role
Java / Visual Basic Developer
Responsibilities
-
Design, develop, test, and maintain applications using Java and Visual Basic (VB6/VB.NET).

Migrate legacy VB applications to modern Java-based platforms where applicable.
-
Work closely with business analysts, QA testers, and project managers to gather requirements and deliver scalable solutions.

Write efficient, reusable, and maintainable code following state development standards.
-
Participate in code reviews, peer programming, and system troubleshooting.
-
Ensure application compliance with security, accessibility, and performance standards set by the State of Texas.

Create and maintain technical documentation for ongoing support and future enhancements.

Required Skills:
-
8+ years of experience with Java (J2EE, Spring, JSP, Servlets) .

5+ years of hands-on development in Visual Basic (VB6 or VB.NET) .

Strong experience with SQL , stored procedures , and relational databases (preferably Oracle or SQL Server).

Experience with version control tools such as Git , TFS , or SVN .

Familiarity with application servers like WebLogic or Tomcat.

Knowledge of REST/SOAP web services .

Strong debugging and problem-solving skills.
-
Excellent communication skills and experience working in an Agile or hybrid environment.
Preferred Qualifications
-
Prior experience working on State of Texas projects or other government entities.
-
Experience in modernizing legacy applications .
-
Familiarity with Texas DIR guidelines and CAPPS (Centralized Accounting and Payroll/Personnel System) is a plus.
