Java / Visual Basic Developer

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and maintain applications using Java and Visual Basic (VB6/VB.NET).

• Migrate legacy VB applications to modern Java-based platforms where applicable.

• Work closely with business analysts, QA testers, and project managers to gather requirements and deliver scalable solutions.

• Write efficient, reusable, and maintainable code following state development standards.

• Participate in code reviews, peer programming, and system troubleshooting.

• Ensure application compliance with security, accessibility, and performance standards set by the State of Texas.

• Create and maintain technical documentation for ongoing support and future enhancements.

• Required Skills:

• 8+ years of experience with Java (J2EE, Spring, JSP, Servlets) .

• 5+ years of hands-on development in Visual Basic (VB6 or VB.NET) .

• Strong experience with SQL , stored procedures , and relational databases (preferably Oracle or SQL Server).

• Experience with version control tools such as Git , TFS , or SVN .

• Familiarity with application servers like WebLogic or Tomcat.

• Knowledge of REST/SOAP web services .

• Strong debugging and problem-solving skills.

• Excellent communication skills and experience working in an Agile or hybrid environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience working on State of Texas projects or other government entities.

• Experience in modernizing legacy applications .

• Familiarity with Texas DIR guidelines and CAPPS (Centralized Accounting and Payroll/Personnel System) is a plus.
