As a Junior Urban Data Scientist at Dar's Urban Intelligence Lab (UIL) in Bangalore, India, with global collaboration, you will play a crucial role in transforming how cities are understood, planned, and designed through data and AI-driven research and innovation. Your responsibilities will include: - Supporting data acquisition, cleaning, and validation for urban analytics projects using various datasets such as mobility traces, POI data, census figures, satellite imagery, cell phone data, and transport network datasets. - Developing and maintaining Python-based data processing scripts and Jupyter notebooks under the guidance of senior team members. - Performing exploratory spatial data analysis (ESDA) and creating visualizations to effectively communicate patterns in urban form, movement, and land use. - Assisting in the design and implementation of spatial databases (PostgreSQL/PostGIS) and contributing to pipeline documentation. - Contributing to client deliverables by preparing charts, maps, summary tables, and written analytical sections. - Participating in internal knowledge-sharing sessions and research sprints to stay updated on urban data science methods and tools. - Taking ownership of discrete analytical modules within larger projects gradually, with increasing autonomy over time. Qualifications and Experience required for this role are: - A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Urban Planning, Data Science, Geography, Geoinformatics, Economics, or a related discipline. - 13 years of relevant professional or research experience, including internships, dissertation work, and independent projects. - Working knowledge of Python for data analysis, with familiarity with pandas, geopandas, and matplotlib being essential. - Basic understanding of spatial data concepts such as coordinate systems, shapefiles, GeoJSON, and raster vs. vector data. - Comfort with version control (Git) and collaborative coding workflows. - Curiosity, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn quickly in a fast-paced research environment. - Good written communication skills to describe analytical findings clearly for non-specialist readers. Desirable Skills that would be beneficial for the role include exposure to SQL or spatial databases (PostGIS, SQLite/SpatiaLite), familiarity with QGIS, ArcGIS, or other GIS desktop tools, any experience with mobility or transport data (GTFS, GPS traces, origin-destination matrices), interest in urban economics, accessibility analysis, or human geography, exposure to machine learning concepts, and prior coursework or projects involving cities in the Global South.
