About the role
As an Engineering Manager at our company, you will play a crucial role in leading the day-to-day operations of the engineering organization. You will be responsible for driving product delivery, providing architectural direction, fostering team health, and ensuring smooth execution. Your focus will be on building a strong team, enabling leads, and ensuring timely delivery without being a bottleneck. Key Responsibilities: - Delivery accountability: Own the engineering team's delivery commitments, ensuring technical clarity for execution. Work with Squad Leads to meet sprint goals, resolve blockers, and communicate timelines proactively. - Engineering culture: Model and reinforce a culture of ownership, quality, and continuous improvement. Champion engineering best practices and monitor velocity, morale, and collaboration within the team. - Cross-functional collaboration: Represent Engineering in discussions with Product, QA, DevOps, and Sr. Program Manager to align priorities and dependencies. - Escalation handling: Act as the first escalation point for engineering delivery issues, resolving conflicts within and between squads before they escalate to the VP. - Hiring and onboarding: Partner with leadership to recruit senior engineers and leads. Take ownership of onboarding new hires effectively. Qualifications Required: - 1218 years of experience in software engineering or product delivery, with at least 5+ years in an engineering management or team lead role. - Proven track record of managing multiple teams or squads concurrently in a product engineering environment. - Strong operational and organizational skills, excelling at planning, execution, and ensuring sustainable outcomes delivery. - Excellent people skills, capable of building trust, providing constructive feedback, and developing engineers at various levels. - Experience in Agile and squad-based delivery models; familiarity with stream-aligned team structures is a plus. - Strong communication skills to represent Engineering clearly to Product, clients, and leadership. Proficiency in writing and conducting productive meetings. - High resilience and composure to make sound decisions under pressure, especially in challenging situations. Additional Company Details: Our company is a SaaS platform specifically designed for the scholarly publishing domain, collaborating with leading academic publishers and societies to power their publishing workflows. We are transitioning our engineering organization into three stream-aligned squads, with the Engineering Manager playing a crucial role in this transformation.
