ROLE:Sr. Data Engineering Manager
Location:Columbia, MD, Lisle, IL or Minneapolis, MN Hybrid (4 days a week on site) Duration: Fulltime Rate:$160k direct perm + up to 20% bonus
Must haves: Although this is a manager role they need to be able to be hands on so Leads and Sr. managers will be fine. Must have hands on experience with GCP. Strong experience with Snowflake. Should have experienced with Airflow. Experience managing teams or being the lead on projects.
Description: Senior Manager, Data Engineering We are a data‑driven organization focused on building reliable, scalable data capabilities that power analytics, AI, and strategic decision-making. Our Data Engineering team provides the foundational platforms, pipelines, and governance that enable trusted, timely, and high‑quality data across the enterprise.
We are seeking a Senior Manager, Data Engineering to lead a growing team responsible for designing, implementing, and continually improving our cloud‑based data ecosystem. This role blends hands‑on technical depth with people leadership, guiding engineers to deliver high‑impact solutions within a modern stack that includes GCP, AWS, Python, SQL, Airflow, and Snowflake.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Strategy · Lead, mentor, and grow a high‑performing team of data engineers, focusing on skill development, quality, and delivery excellence. · Define and execute the technology roadmap for data acquisition, processing, storage, and utilization across the organization. · Serve as a key leader within the Data & Analytics function, contributing to long-term strategy and fostering a strong data-driven culture. · Establish clear SLAs and best practices for production datasets, pipelines, and operational processes.
Technical Ownership: · Oversee the design, development, and optimization of large‑scale data pipelines and ETL processes, primarily on Google Cloud Platform with complementary work in AWS. · Ensure solutions are robust, well‑architected, and aligned with engineering standards around reliability, scalability, and performance. · Guide the implementation of orchestration frameworks such as Airflow, and data warehousing using Snowflake. · Participate in technical reviews and, when needed, contribute hands‑on with coding, troubleshooting, testing, and documentation. · Support the development of self‑service layers and tools that empower analysts, data scientists, and product teams.
Cross‑Functional Collaboration: · Partner closely with product managers, analysts, and data scientists to translate requirements into technical solutions. · Ensure strong communication and alignment across engineering, analytics, and business stakeholders. · Optimize workflows, communication channels, and end‑to‑end processes between teams.
Operational Excellence: · Manage competing priorities in a fast‑paced environment while ensuring pipeline reliability and data quality. · Evaluate and enhance current engineering processes to improve clarity, collaboration, and throughput. · Support interview loops for engineering candidates, participate in hiring decisions, and contribute to technical assessments (coding may be part of the interview process).
Required Qualifications: · Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field. · 8+ years of experience in data engineering (data platforms, ingestion, pipeline development, or data management). · 3+ years of leadership experience building and managing high‑performing engineering teams. · 2+ years of hands‑on experience with GCP services such as BigQuery, Composer, GCS, Dataflow, or Datastream. · Strong background in Python, SQL, Airflow, and Snowflake. · Demonstrated progression from Data Engineer to roles with increasing ownership and complexity. · Ability to translate complex engineering concepts to non‑technical audiences. · Experience defining roadmaps, executing iteratively, and delivering production‑ready systems. · Proven ability to manage multiple competing priorities in an Agile environment. · Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with a proactive approach to improving processes. · Must be able to work on‑site 4 days per week
